“This piece was commissioned by Wang Yuyan in 2021. The idea of Sonata was inspired by great classical composers, Beethoven especially. Indeed, the first movement is traditional in both form and harmonic structure. The second movement is more complex rhythmically, even if, paradoxically, the melodies sound sweet. The third movement is a tribute to the Brazilian song “Tico Tico” by Zequinha de Abreu, and has an interlude in 7/8 to provide some rhythmical contrast before returning to the Latin meter. Throughout the piece, the marimba and the vibraphone alternate between playing the themes and accompaniments, which I believe creates a nice challenge.” – Éric Sammut
